The Wolves had an early lead tarnished, and were ultimately out****ned in=20
a shootout by the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights in Friday night's game.
Check=20
out the story:
OMAHA, Nebraska---The Chicago Wolves surrendered a two-goal, third-
period lead before falling to the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, 7-6, in a=20
shootout at the Omaha Civic Auditorium on Friday.
In the shootout, Knights left wing David Moss and defenseman Richie=20
Regehr recorded goals against Wolves netminder Michael Garnett. Center=20
Kevin Doell was the only Chicago player to find the back of the net.
Knights right wing Carsen Germyn collected three goals and an assist=20
during the game, the first hat trick against Chicago this season.=20
Defenseman Mark Giordano earned four assists. The Wolves surrendered a=20
season-high four power-play goals, two of which came during the third=20
stanza. Center Jared Ross led the way for Chicago with a team season-
high three assists, his first AHL multi-point contest.
Midway through the third period, Omaha took advantage of a
five-on-three=20
power play to start its comeback. Germyn?s second goal of the night, a=20
slap shot from the point, beat Garnett, short-side, at 8:33 of the
third=20
stanza.
Then, Germyn?s third tally of the night tied the game, 5-5. With Omaha=20
working on the power play again, he drove a shot from the top of the=20
right circle that found its way past Garnett at 11:12 of the frame.
Thirty-nine seconds later, the Knights grabbed their first lead of the=20
contest, 6-5. Left wing Erik Nystrom broke in on Garnett, pulled him
out=20
of his crease with a toe drag, and floated a pass back through the slot=20
that linemate Brandon Prust buried into the unguarded net at 11:53 of=20
the third period.
With just under three minutes remaining in regulation, Chicago tied the=20
game, 6-6, on a power-play goal of its own. Right wing Pat Dwyer
managed=20
to fight his way through a crease scramble long enough to chip a loose=20
puck past Knights goaltender Brett Krahn and into the net at 17:02.
Chicago (3-3-1-1) has exploded for at least five goals in each of its=20
last three games after being held to a total of five goals in its=20
previous four games. The Wolves dropped their first shootout of the=20
season after posting a 4-2 mark last season.
Omaha (4-3-0-2) avenged the 5-2 loss against the Wolves on Oct. 7, the=20
regular-season opener.
The Wolves jumped out to an early lead with two goals in the game's=20
first 90 seconds. Fifty-four seconds after the opening draw, defenseman=20
Braydon Coburn's first goal of the season gave the team a 1-0
advantage.=20
Coburn, skating in his first game of the year with the Wolves after=20
being assigned by the Atlanta Thrashers yesterday, took a pass at the=20
point, ****fted to his right and rifled a shot past Krahn at 0:55 of the=20
first period.
Krahn (3-1-2) recorded 38 saves in 64:06 minutes of play. Krahn stopped=20
Chicago right wing Scott Barney on a penalty shot attempt late in the=20
second period, the Wolves second attempt in as many games.
Then, 35 seconds later, center Kevin Doell's third goal of the year=20
pushed the lead to 2-0. With Chicago on the attack, defenseman Tim=20
Wedderburn dumped the puck towards the goal-mouth where it bounced off
a=20
Knights defender and dropped into the crease. Doell stood his ground in=20
a crowd, corralled the puck and flipped it into the net at 1:30 of the=20
opening period. Last season, Doell notched just four goals in 45 games=20
with Chicago.
Later in the period, Omaha answered with two power-play goals to even=20
the score. First, a breakaway goal off the stick of right wing Carsen=20
Germyn cut the lead in half, 2-1. The Knights forward snuck behind the=20
Wolves defense, faked to his backhand, and then roofed a shot, top-
shelf, past Garnett at 8:12 of the first stanza.
Garnett (0-0-1) posted 26 saves in his first action with the team this=20
season. The 22-year-old goaltender was reassigned by Atlanta on=20
Thursday.
Omaha left wing David Moss evened the match, 2-2. The Knights forward=20
collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and cruised in on a two-on-
one break before muscling his way to the net and chipping a shot over=20
Garnett at 11:13.
Just over two minutes later, Wolves left wing Ramzi Abid regained the=20
lead, 3-2. Abid hopped on a loose puck off a draw to Krahn's left and=20
surprised the netminder with a backhand shot that snuck inside the post=20
at 13:36 of the opening frame.
Late in the second period, Omaha right wing Brantt Myhres' first goal
of=20
the season evened the score, 3-3. Myhers screened Garnett then=20
redirected a Brandon Rogers shot through Garnett's pads at 13:10.
It took Chicago just 13 seconds to grab the lead back, 4-3, when right=20
wing Scott Barney connected on his team-leading sixth goal of the year.=20
Ross had a shot attempt flutter into the slot where Barney grabbed it=20
and wristed a shot past an out of position Krahn at 13:23 of the middle=20
stanza.
With 61 seconds remaining in the second period, Abid?s second goal of=20
the night pushed Chicago's lead to 5-3. Abid snagged the puck in the=20
right corner, wheeled to the front of the net and flung a shot over=20
Krahn?s shoulder at 18:59 of the second period.
After the three-game road swing, the Wolves head home to face the Iowa=20
Stars at the Allstate Arena on Saturday at 7 p.m.
